Shandur Pass

Activities

Shandur Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass connecting Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Ghizer district in Gilgit-Baltistan. Sitting at an elevation of about 3,700 meters (12,139 feet), it is widely known for hosting the Shandur Polo Festival and for being home to what is often described as the highest polo ground in the world.

Unlike built tourist resorts, Shandur Pass is an open plateau surrounded by rolling hills and distant peaks. There are no towns here, only seasonal movement. Most visitors come either for the annual polo festival or as part of a longer road journey between Chitral and Gilgit during the short summer season when the pass is open.

Geographic and Historical Context

Shandur Pass has long served as a natural link between the regions of Chitral and Gilgit. Historically, it was used by local communities, traders, and herders moving livestock between summer and winter grazing grounds.

The flat nature of the plateau made it suitable for polo, a game deeply rooted in the region’s culture. Over time, matches between teams from Chitral and Gilgit became a regular tradition, eventually growing into the annual Shandur Polo Festival.

The pass remains snowbound for much of the year. Access is usually limited to a few months in summer, which shapes both travel and local activity.

What to See and Experience at Shandur Pass

Shandur Polo Ground
The main landmark is the natural grass polo field where teams from Chitral and Gilgit play traditional freestyle polo. Matches are fast, physical, and played without many of the formal rules seen elsewhere.

Open Plateau Landscape
Beyond polo, the wide open land, grazing animals, and distant mountains define the experience. The lack of development is part of the appeal.

Camping
During the summer, especially around the festival, visitors camp near the polo ground. Facilities are basic, and travelers must bring their own equipment.

Photography
Shandur offers wide landscapes, changing skies, and strong contrasts between green ground and surrounding peaks. Early-morning and late-afternoon light are best.
