Ansoo Lake

Activities

Ansoo Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake in the Kaghan Valley, named for its teardrop shape. It sits near Malika Parbat, the highest peak in the Kaghan Valley, and is known more for the journey than for facilities at the destination.

This is not a casual sightseeing stop. Ansoo Lake trek is demanding, usually done as a full-day hike from the Saif ul Malook side, and it requires solid fitness and careful planning.

Geographic Context and Significance

Ansoo Lake altitude is commonly listed around 4,126 meters above sea level, placing it among the high lakes of the Himalayan range in this region.

Another detail often repeated in credible summaries is its discovery story. Both KP Tourism and general references mention that the lake was discovered in 1993, often linked to Pakistan Air Force pilots flying over the area.

What to See and Experience at Ansoo Lake

The lake itself is small and seasonal in appearance. Depending on snowmelt and weather, it may look fuller in mid-summer and can appear partly frozen or shallow outside the main season.

What makes the visit memorable is the full experience:

  • The teardrop shape that gives it the name “Ansoo” (teardrop).

  • High ridge viewpoints on the way, where you can look back toward Saif ul Malook side and surrounding peaks.

  • Silence and scale. This is one of those treks where the landscape feels larger than the plan you made on the map.

Location and Access Information

Ansoo Lake Saif ul Malook is the most common route reference because many trekkers start after reaching Saif ul Malook Lake near Naran. KP Tourism specifically describes access to Saif ul Malook as a difficult trek.

Practical access flow:

  • Reach Naran

  • Travel to Saif ul Malook (often by jeep, depending on road conditions and season)

  • Start the trek toward Ansoo Lake

Entry and ticketing

There is no formal “lake ticket” booth at Ansoo Lake. The main costs are transport to the start point and the choice of guide or support. KP Tourism treats it as a trekking destination rather than a ticketed attraction.

Trek Difficulty and Safety

This heading is necessary for Ansoo Lake.

  • The trek is widely described as difficult and should be treated as a full-day effort.

  • The weather can change fast at this altitude. Fog and rain can reduce visibility and make the route risky.

  • Many hikers choose to go with a local guide because route-finding can be confusing in cloud cover, and the terrain is steep in sections.

If someone has never done a high-altitude trek in Pakistan, Ansoo Lake is not the place to “try it for the first time” without support.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Ansoo Lake is generally the summer trekking window when snow has melted enough for safer access, commonly June to September, with many travelers preferring July and August for the best chance of a visible lake.

Outside this season, snow and weather risk increase sharply.

Visitor Tips

These are written to prevent real problems:

  • Start early morning. Daylight matters more than speed.

  • Carry at least 2 liters of water per person and high-energy snacks.

  • Wear proper hiking shoes with grip.

  • Pack a warm layer, rain protection, and basic first aid.

  • Do not rely on mobile signals. Tell someone your route plan before you go.

  • If clouds roll in, turn back early. Summit pride is not worth getting lost.

Environmental Awareness

Ansoo Lake is in a fragile high-altitude zone where litter does not break down quickly.

  • Carry every wrapper and bottle back to Naran.

  • Do not wash dishes or throw food into streams.

  • Stay on existing paths where possible to avoid damaging alpine ground cover.

  • Keep noise low. This is one of the few places where quiet still exists.

If visitors treat it like a picnic spot, the lake and trail will degrade quickly.
